Though word on the street said that GTO stood for gas, tires, and oil, which this street beast devoured in rare quantities, the letters were in fact stolen from the Ferrari 250 GTO, then recently introduced. The car, originated in 1964 and back then the GTO was just a souped up Tempest. This so-called Grand Tempest Option, initially led to the letters GTO.
