Ronald Wong, the designer of this casting, specializes in Hot Wheels Premium and Red Line Club castings. However, as one of his favorite cars is the McLaren F1, he was able to reach out to the Matchbox team to help design this casting. At the same time he was also designing the Hot Wheels Premium counterpart of this car; consequently the two models could share parts. This casting is based on the homologation version of the race car; the Hot Wheels after the race car itself.
