The Models of Yesteryear range was introduced by Lesney in 1956 to supplement the Matchbox Series range which had been in production since 1953. The models were based on historical vehicles rather than contemporary subjects, [1] and the range was aimed at adult collectors rather than children.[2] The collection was produced until 1996.
During the early years of the range the models were marketed as "Models of Yesteryear" without reference to the Matchbox brand. This is apparent on early boxes, [3] in early catalogs [4] and on the base of early models. [5]
