The Retro Series (2022) was released in 2022 and sold exclusively at Target retailers. This line consisted of 24 models, based on either an older mainline version of the casting or retro inspired liveries that were released for this particular assortment. The card art was redesigned half-way through the year from the old orange / yellow / and red color scheme in favor of a dark blue background. It would be revised again to have a yellow background, and finally baby blue with yellow and red stripes for the final batch.
This marked the last year for the Retro Series, as it was discontinued in 2023 and replaced by the Matchbox Target Series. Those models are exclusive to each even numbered case, similar to what Hot Wheels does for their Target Red Editions. This line was subsequently canceled in mid-2022, as some models never reached US shores, with some models never leaving production.
