Produced from 1974-1983, the first generation Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is a small family car offered in a 3/5 door hatchback, 2 door pickup truck and convertible body styles. It shifted the philosophy of VW's preference for rear mounted water cooled engines and rear wheel drive to front mounted air cooled engines and front wheel drive. It was supposed to replace the aging Volkswagen Beetle (which continued to be sold until 2003), but the Golf ended up outlasting it anyways.
The Matchbox Volkswagen Golf MK1 is based on the 1975 Volkswagen Golf MK1 GTI, a sportier version in response to the negative reaction of the Beetle GSR. It made its debut for the 2020 mainline for the 1-100 series under the subline of MBX City in Orange with White and Black Stripes. The casting has a number of MB1200 and has been in production ever since.
